TOGETHER WITH FINOUT
FinOps X 2026 made one thing clear: reactive cost management is over

FinOps has officially become a full Technology Financial Management discipline. AI costs are exploding, token pricing is replacing flat-rate subscriptions, and the teams winning right now are doing three things:

  • Mastering Tokenomics: knowing what AI actually costs and what value it generates

  • Investigating root causes in minutes, not hours

  • Routing the right action automatically, without a human in every step

That is exactly what Finout Agents do. Specialized agents scan cloud, Kubernetes, AI, and SaaS for waste and anomalies. They turn hours of root-cause analysis into minutes. They route actions to Jira, Slack, and ServiceNow with built-in governance. Billy answers the questions. MegaBill keeps every dollar in context.

FINOPS
Tokenomics took over FinOpsX

The FinOps Foundation just dropped massive announcements at their annual conference, fundamentally changing how we think about AI costs.

The biggest news? The creation of the Tokenomics Foundation to help companies manage their AI spending.

Here's why this matters and what you need to know:

  • Tokens are the new compute hours: AI token usage is growing fast, and prices are highly volatile. Tokenomics helps answer two hard questions: what does AI actually cost, and what value does it create for your business?

  • Industry-wide backing: Major players like Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and SAP are backing this effort to create open standards for AI billing.

  • AI won't replace you: As Mike Fuller put it: "AI won't take FinOps jobs, but FinOps practitioners who know AI better will."

  • New Maturity Model: A new framework was introduced to help teams move from basic cost alerts to AI-powered autonomous agents making decisions.

Other Major Updates:

  • FOCUS 1.4 is here: Making it easier to match invoices and track commitment discounts across different cloud providers.

  • Simplified Certifications: You can now start with the Practitioner or Engineer certification, then add three modules (FOCUS Analyst, AI Value, and Technology Value) to become a full FinOps Professional.

  • Tokenomicon 2027: Next year's FinOps X will merge into a massive new event called Tokenomicon (June 7-10, 2027 in San Diego).

The message is clear: managing AI costs is no longer optional, and FinOps teams need new skills to do it right.

CLOUD PROVIDERS
FinOpsX Cloud Provider Updates

AWS

AWS FinOps Agent can now answer cost questions, find savings, and open tickets automatically; making cost-to-action workflows faster without manual steps.

Savings Plans Purchase Analyzer added target coverage analysis so teams can plan commit amounts based on a set percentage of On-Demand spend, with custom lookback periods.

Graviton5-powered M9g and M9gd instances are now available, offering up to 25% better performance than Graviton4 and support for Savings Plans and Spot pricing.

Google Cloud

BigQuery fluid scaling now bills per second with no minimum, so you only pay for the exact capacity your bursty analytics jobs use.

BigQuery daily token quotas for GenAI functions are now GA, letting admins cap AI spend directly inside BigQuery to stop runaway model costs.

Azure

Azure Cobalt 200 VMs offer up to 50% better CPU performance on Arm-based hardware, giving teams a more cost-efficient option for large cloud-native workloads.

FinOpsX: My Key Takeaways

Completely blasted after whats been one of the most important moments for FinOps Weekly.

In this video I give you my thoughts about FinOpsX experience, changes announced and what they mean for FinOps practice.

AWS
The Catch with the New AWS FinOps Agent

AWS released its new FinOps Agent in public preview for AI-powered cost management, but multi-account setups face a major hurdle.

  • The Blind Spot: The agent only sees costs for the specific account it's installed in, completely ignoring shared organizational billing views.

  • The Security Dilemma: To get org-wide visibility, you are forced to run the agent in your management account: breaking the security best practice of keeping workloads out of it.

  • The Details: The tool includes anomaly detection and Slack/Jira integrations, but is currently limited to English and the us-east-1 region.

Teams must now weigh whether AI-powered cost visibility is worth the security trade-off in their management account.

GCP
[CODE] Prevent Cloud 'Bill Shock' with Real-Time Alerts

A developer built a system that lets you shut down runaway cloud resources directly from your phone, solving the common problem of burning through budgets while trying to log in after a delayed email alert.

Here is how the automated workflow functions:

  • Alert Pipeline: When Google Cloud detects a budget threshold crossed, it sends a Pub/Sub message. A Cloud Function catches this and writes the alert to a Google Sheet, prompting AppSheet to send a push notification to your phone.

  • Kill Switch: Tapping the "Kill Resources" button in the app triggers a webhook. This calls a second Cloud Function that uses the Google Compute API to immediately stop the expensive resource.

  • Code Details: The guide provides the complete Python code and configuration steps. Because the architecture is highly adaptable, you can easily modify the emergency response to revoke permissions or entirely disable billing accounts.

This workflow turns emergency cost response from a manual, hour-long panic into a process that takes just seconds.

🎖️ MENTION OF HONOUR
The Hidden Problem with Cloud Cost Tools

Most FinOps tools charge a percentage of your total cloud spend, creating a strange dynamic: vendors make more money when your cloud bills go up.

  • Incentive Trap: As expensive AI workloads drive up budgets, percentage-based pricing means vendors profit from your growing bills rather than your actual savings.

  • What Actually Works: The most effective cost-reduction strategies cost nothing; shift left by estimating costs in pull requests, block expensive deployments, and automatically shut down idle resources.

  • Free Stack: Before buying expensive dashboards, leverage free native tools like AWS Cost Explorer, OpenCost for Kubernetes, and Infracost to put data directly in front of your engineers.
