FinOps XE Breakout Talks Now Available

FinOps Foundation Released several of the FinOps XE Breakout Talks we were waiting for.

Those who were at the event had to make choices as they overlapped. So people couldn’t attend all the sessions even if they wanted to.

For those who couldn’t make it to the event, this knowledge is diamonds for your FinOps Practices. More Talks are to be uploaded in the following days (I hope). So good stuff you should start applying today on your teams.

FOCUS
FOCUS 101

Microsoft made a great couple of articles regarding FOCUS basics.

Both are really good content for people learning the standard. The first one is oriented to explaining the standard and what it is all about. For those who are more advanced in the topic, it might be a bit too basic but it’s something I’ll read again anyway.

Column one was a really interesting one, as for example I am more focused on engineering, and scripting roles and less on data, it allowed me to get a new view of how to handle the data.

Great stuff, looking forward to more articles in this series!

State of Cloud Costs

Cloud costs are becoming more complex as companies use new technologies. This report looks at how hundreds of companies spend their cloud money on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Here are some key findings:

  1. Companies are spending more on graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI tasks. GPU costs now make up 14% of their computing costs, up from 10% last year.

  2. More companies are using ARM-based computer instances. Companies now spend 18% of their computing costs on Arm, double what they spent last year.

  3. Container costs are rising. Companies now spend 35% of their computing budget on containers, up from 30% last year. However, 83% of container costs are wasted on unused resources.

  4. Many companies still use older, less efficient technologies. 83% of companies still use older types of computer instances.

  5. Data transfer between different areas in the cloud is expensive. It makes up almost half of all data transfer costs.

  6. Fewer companies are using discount programs offered by cloud providers. Only 67% use these programs, down from 72% last year.

AWS
HP boosts Kubernetes efficiency by 40% with Karpenter

HP PrintOS improved their Amazon EKS cluster's efficiency by using Karpenter, a tool for managing Kubernetes nodes. They achieved a 40% better use of their computing resources and saved money.

PrintOS runs 3D simulations that need a lot of computing power. They wanted a way to automatically add or remove computer nodes as needed, without wasting resources. Karpenter helped by:

  1. Adding new nodes quickly when simulations needed more power

  2. Removing unused nodes to save money

  3. Choosing the right types of nodes for each job

  4. Working well with their existing tools like Argo Workflows

The system uses special labels to make sure simulations run on the right nodes. It can use both regular and spot instances, which are cheaper but can be taken away suddenly.

This setup helped PrintOS save over $125,000 per year on test environments. It also made upgrading their system much faster - from 2 hours to just 15 minutes.

It’s a really good technical deep dive, definitely worth to take a look!

FinOps Regional Communities Raising

FinOps Denmark 1st Meetup

A new FinOps community has launched in Denmark, started by Henrique Campos Amorim and four other organizers. The group held its first event, bringing together 20 FinOps enthusiasts to discuss challenges in managing cloud costs. Attendees came from public institutions, private companies, and large Danish enterprises.

It began with Henrique reaching out to LinkedIn users in Denmark who had "#FinOps" in their profiles. The launch event featured panel discussions and small group conversations on cloud cost management. The community plans to hold more events, workshops, and debates on real-world FinOps use cases

Amazon has added a new feature called Predictive Scaling to their Elastic Container Service (ECS). Predictive Scaling uses machine learning to forecast when an application will need more resources.

AWS has introduced Invoice Configuration. This new feature lets you customize your AWS invoices.

The Cloud Whisperer made this GCP spot pricing report for December 2024. This report shows how much money you can save by using spot instances instead of regular on-demand instances.
