Bulletproof your FinOps Pipelines

This article by Benjamin Van der Maas explains how to make data pipelines more stable when working with changing data columns using the Polars library in Python.

The main problem it solves is handling data sources that might change their structure over time without breaking your processing system.

Here's how it works:

  • The system uses a config.json file to define which columns you want to keep and their data types.

  • Any extra columns from the source get stored in a special 'unusedColumns' section, so no data is lost.

If important columns are missing, the system adds them automatically with empty values. The process follows these steps:

  1. Read the source data into Polars

  2. Load the configuration file

  3. Filter the data to keep needed columns

  4. Store unused columns separately

  5. Convert data types to match requirements

  6. Save the result as a Parquet file

The benefit is that your pipeline keeps running even when source data changes unexpectedly.

FinOps Priorities

Here are the smart ways companies can cut their cloud costs:

  • Unused Storage Cleanup: Many companies keep paying for storage they don't use anymore. It's like paying for an empty storage unit. The fix? Remove or disconnect unused storage.

  • Smart Data Management: Companies often keep too much old data, which costs money to store. Having clear rules about what data to keep and what to remove helps save money.

  • Better Resource Planning: Instead of buying all cloud resources at once, spread out your purchases over time. This helps avoid spending too much money upfront.

  • Location Matters: Where you put your cloud services affects costs. Moving data between different zones costs money, so it's important to plan carefully.

  • Team Culture: The biggest savings often come from teaching teams to think about costs. When people understand how their actions affect spending, they make better choices.

The article mentions an upcoming FinOps meeting in Zurich on April 8th.

AWS
Avoid Hidden AWS Costs

Let's look at the main things that make your cloud bills bigger than expected:

  • Check your AWS account regularly for unused stuff

  • Keep your data close together when possible

  • Use the right-sized machines for your needs

  • Set up alerts before bills get too high

  • Clean up old files and backups you don't need
