Getting started with AI tokenomics? Start here.

AI introduces a new cost model. Every team can contribute to token spend.

This guide shows you how to apply FinOps principles to AI. Prioritize your efforts and build the visibility, governance, and accountability needed to scale AI with confidence.

FINOPS TOOL
Open Source Azure FinOps Dashboard

Anyone who manages Azure across many subscriptions knows the drill. You export a pile of CSVs, build the same pivot table again, and still cannot answer simple questions like total spend by department. A developer built a free, open source dashboard to fix this exact problem.

It pulls cost data from every subscription into one place and lets you slice it by tags like department, environment, and application. The tool only works if your tagging is solid first.

The builder uses an Azure policy that blocks creating a resource group unless six key tags are filled in. Skip this step and your dashboard just shows a pile of untagged, unusable data.

It shows full dollar amounts, not rounded numbers, because finance teams need exact figures. It uses actual cost data, not amortized, so totals match what shows up on the real invoice.

Login is locked down through Microsoft Entra ID, so only approved people can see the numbers.

AI COST MANAGEMENT
AI Cost Management: How Prepared Are You?

AI spending is getting out of hand at many companies. Uber used up its whole AI budget in just four months. Microsoft cut off Claude Code after running out of yearly AI funds early. Tesla now caps employee AI spending at $200 a week. These stories show a real problem.

Old FinOps methods were not built for AI costs like model training, data pipelines, and specialized computing power.

Forrester says companies need five building blocks to manage this well. These are people, knowledge, visibility, optimization, and operations.

People means clear roles so teams can act fast on cost problems. Knowledge means training staff on things like model choice and pricing.

Pinterest and Wayfair are named as companies doing this well. AI costs will not manage themselves. Building strong habits now can save real money later.

AWS
AWS Spot Instances Deep Dive: How to Save Up to 90% on Compute Costs Safely

Cloud bills can grow fast, and many teams miss one of the easiest ways to cut costs. That tool is AWS Spot Instances.

The trick is not avoiding these interruptions, but building systems that handle them well. Good fits for Spot include batch jobs, CI/CD build runners, Kubernetes worker nodes, and big data tools like Spark or EMR.

These jobs can restart easily if interrupted. Bad fits include production databases and single-instance apps that cannot handle sudden shutdowns.

A few smart habits make Spot safe to use. Mix several instance types instead of relying on one. Spread work across multiple availability zones. Blend Spot with a small base of On-Demand instances, often around 70 percent Spot and 30 percent On-Demand.

Use Auto Scaling Groups to replace lost instances automatically. One example in the article showed a team cutting their On-Demand instance count from 50 to 15, adding 35 Spot instances instead, and keeping the same performance while saving real money.

FinOps teams that combine Spot Instances with smart architecture get more value from every cloud dollar, not just a lower bill.

CLOUD PROVIDERS
AWS adds smarter storage tiers, GCP tunes BigQuery caps, Azure boosts agent ROI tracking

AWS

CloudWatch Logs now auto-tiers storage between Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive tiers to cut log storage costs.

Amazon MQ lets you resize RabbitMQ storage on its own, so you don't have to change your instance type just to get more disk space.

RDS now allows 4 storage changes per day, giving teams more room to adjust storage size as needs change.

Lambda can now use code stored in your own S3 buckets, cutting quota limits and simplifying cost tracking for functions.

Google Cloud

BigQuery now lets you cap slots per project, making it easier to control spend and set limits in shared reservations.

New C4N machine series targets network-heavy workloads, giving teams a faster option for I/O-bound apps that need better cost efficiency.

Azure

Microsoft Foundry now tracks agent ROI, comparing what an AI agent costs to run against the value it delivers.

FINOPS TOOLS
Real-time Cloud Cost From Live Resource Inventory

Cloud bills often show up a day late. By the time you see a cost report, that oversized VM has already been running for hours. A new open source tool called CloudTally tries to fix that gap.

Instead of waiting on billing exports, it looks at what cloud resources are actually running right now and prices them out instantly. It works with Google Cloud today, with AWS and Azure support planned for later.

Every cost estimate comes with a confidence label. Some numbers are exact, based on real pricing data. Others are estimated with clear assumptions spelled out.

Usage-based costs, like data transfer or serverless requests, get flagged as unknown rather than guessed at. Nothing gets silently marked as free when it is not.

The tool covers roughly 60 to 80 percent of typical cloud spend, the part tied to resources you can see running.

🎖️ MENTION OF HONOUR
Democratizing Cloud Costs: An Open-Source, AI-Powered AWS Cost Monitor for Slack

A developer once lost $22,000 in a single month on AWS because a broken process ran wild for weeks. The bill caught it, but he didn't. That story sits at the heart of a new open-source tool called Cost Guardian.

The problem it is missing attention. Cloud dashboards only work if someone remembers to check them. AWS already offers cost anomaly detection for free, plus an AI chat layer to explain spend spikes.

But that AI layer costs $19 per user each month once you pass 25 questions. For small teams or side projects, that adds up fast. So the author built his own version that posts alerts straight into Slack.

It explains spend jumps in plain language, learns from feedback, and works with any AI model you choose. It also connects to other cost sources beyond AWS, like Databricks or Azure bills.

Best part, it is free and open source under MIT license. Cost should not live behind one person's login.

When spend shows up in Slack, finance, engineering, and leadership all see the same number every day. That shared visibility might be the real fix for surprise cloud bills.
